"It was no trouble at all," Halcyon said, her estimation of her brother's roommate rising. In her line of business, so many men shirked please and thank you.
"We should be going," Andreas said. "The Emporium closes early tonight, and all the head honchos are early risers."
"Alright, well you two have fun. I'll be looking elsewhere for clues." Grabbing a few items she'd placed in a disposable grocery bag, she bid them both a good search and meandered out the door. Once she was outside, she hailed a cab and slid into the cool leather interior. The driver was a rough-shaven Indian man who was listening to a sports game on his headset.
She began stripping, exchanging her jeans and t-shirt for a sleek blue frock and white stilettos.
"Eyes on the road," she muttered to the driver, who grinned in the rear view mirror and swerved around a slow buggy.
Pulling on a long black wig, she artfully applied makeup, cursing when the taxi driver made his wild turns and abrupt stops.
"Thanks," she replied sarcastically when he finally pulled up at the Oxford Library, a tall imposing building with a domed top.
"Keep it," he told her when she offered him a few bills, and she scoffed and tossed them in his lap anyway as he gave her a creepy once over.
It wasn't sunny, but she took the sunglasses out of her bag and pushed them imperiously up her nose, throwing the bag away in the nearest trash can and loping through the open gates.
"This better be worth my time, Hamby," she muttered.
